Egyptian archaeologist releases Cleopatra documentary same day as Netflix

Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass has released a documentary on Cleopatra’s life, coinciding with Netflix’s controversial release of a production depicting the ancient queen as black.

Netflix’s “Queen Cleopatra” is a documentary-drama featuring reenactments and expert interviews, while an online petition criticizing the portrayal has gained significant support.

In Egypt, there are calls to ban Netflix over content deemed offensive to the country’s values, and some reject claims of the black origins of pharaonic civilization.
